Namaskar,
It is a privilege to contribute to the Gorkha United Public School alumni community.
I might not be an ideal Alumnus to share my story, but my work today as a Trade Union Activist is built on the very foundation GUPS provided. As a school founded by ex-Gurkha armies, it is an institution built on the principles of discipline, courage, and resilience.
I was an energetic student, driven by a strong sense of fairness and a need to question injustice. My time at GUPS was profoundly formative because it taught me a core lesson of collective action: that a spirit of protest, without the structure of organization and discipline, is not enough to win a struggle. The school’s environment taught me how to turn that energy into a focused, effective campaign.
Today, I put that lesson into practice. As an activist for transport and gig economy workers in Canberra, my work is to build solidarity and fight for social and economic justice for some of the lowest-paid and most vulnerable workers in Australia, and arguably, in the world.
I have had the privilege of representing thousands of members, helping to lead the campaign for Australia's first-of-its-kind Gig Economy Reform. This was a tough fight that required the exact resilience and strategic discipline I learned at GUPS.
To the current students, I offer this thought: Your education is a tool. Use it to question the world. But remember that true change is never won alone. Real power is not individual; it is collective. Learn the value of solidarity, because that is how you will build a more just and equitable world. It is this same collective strength that is the source of the Gurkha power, bravery, and courage that echoes around the world.
My sincere gratitude to the teachers and staff who helped forge my principles.
Namaskar.
